We are seeking more accounts of detention and incarceration of transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals.
We are looking to gain more information on practices used by jails and prisons, specifically pertaining to transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals in those facilities.
Some information we are gathering…
- When, where and for how long were you incarcerated?
- Specifics regarding where you were housed (alone or with others & what gender) during your time there.
- If you spent any time in some form of solitary confinement or administrative confinement, how long were you kept there? Were you told why you were kept there? Did you express that you were comfortable there, or did you request to be moved?
- Do you feel you were restricted from services, privileges, property, communication, human contact, normal accommodations, etc at any time during your incarceration? If so, which, for how long and was any explanation provided for doing so?
- How were you treated by other inmates in the jail or prison in regards to your transgender status? Did you feel safe?
What was your experience with jail staff? Was the facility staffed by sworn officers such as deputies? Or was the jail staffed by corrections officers? What experiences did you have with these individuals relevant to your transgender identity? - What processes did the jail/prison go through in order to classify or place you in the area where you were ultimately housed? How long did it take? Was there any disagreement between yourself and classification regarding your housing?
- Overall impressions, experiences, perceptions and anything else you feel is worth sharing.
- Do we have permission to share your experience on this page? If so, please include any information regarding any part you would like redacted before being made public.
